English for Adults

We offer a broad range of English courses to children, teenagers and adults, at all levels of proficiency, from absolute beginner to advanced.
Each course has been carefully designed to meet the learning needs of its students. Particular attention is paid to teachers and teaching methodology, learning and teaching materials, course content, learning objectives, assessment and feedback.

ENGLISH COMMUNICATION SKILLS

adult_comThe English Communication Skills programme is suitable for adult students who wish to develop their English knowledge and skills for a wide range of purposes. Each course contains a well structured grammatical syllabus. Students learn new vocabulary, correct pronunciation and have lots of opportunities to practise their listening and speaking skills and develop fluency through a wide range of communicative classroom activities.

OVERSEAS STUDY PREPARATION PROGRAMME

adult_oscprepThe Overseas Study Preparation Programme has been specifically designed for students who wish to develop their English skills in the shortest possible time and prepare for university or college study overseas.

Programme
Each course is six weeks of full-time study. The eight level programme includes General English, Exam Preparation for IELTS or TOEFL and Academic English components.

COURSE COMPONENTS

General English
The General English component focuses on the development of the four essential language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

Examination Preparation [Pre-intermediate to Upper Intermediate]
There are three levels of exam preparation, pre-intermediate, intermediate and upper intermediate.

At pre-intermediate level students study Exam Foundation Skills, which introduces them to academic essay writing, providing a solid foundation for future exam preparation.

At intermediate and upper intermediate levels students can choose to study either an IELTS or TOEFL preparation course. On these courses students will:
- develop the language skills required for the exams
- receive expert guidance and training in essential examination techniques and strategies
- gain valuable exam experience and monitor their progress through practice tests

Academic English
The Academic English component focuses on preparing students for higher education programmes at University or College. This component helps students to develop key skills in note-taking, giving presentations, research and reporting, essay writing, critical thinking, independent learning and active participation in an academic environment.

IELTS PREPARATION

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) provides a profile of a student’s ability to use English in the four major skill areas: reading, writing, listening and speaking. It is primarily used for academic study in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

IELTS does not have a pass/ fail mark. Scores in each skill area are averaged to provide an Overall Band Score. Performance is rated in each skill area on a scale of 1 to 9. In general, an overall band score of 6 to 6.5 is sufficient to enroll directly onto an undergraduate degree programme in an English speaking country and an overall band score of 7 to 7.5 is sufficient to enroll on a post-graduate degree programme.

ILA’s IELTS Preparation Programme
The IELTS Preparation Programme has been designed to thoroughly prepare students to sit the IELTS exam and help them perform to the very best of their abilities. On this programme students:
- develop the complete range of skills required to complete each of the four sections in the IELTS
- receive expert guidance and training in essential examination strategies and techniques
- put their knowledge and skills into practice and gain valuable examination experience with practice tests and a “mock examination”.

TOEFL IBT PREPARATION

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) provides a profile of a student’s ability to use English in the four major skill areas: reading, writing, listening and speaking. It is primarily used for academic study in the United States and Canada.

TOEFL does not have a pass/ fail mark. Each section of the test is scored out of 30, giving a final score out of 120. In general a TOEFL iBT score of 60, (equivalent to 500 in the PBT), is sufficient to enroll directly onto an undergraduate degree programme in an English speaking country and a score of 80-100, (equivalent to 550 to 600 in the PBT), is sufficient to enroll on a post-graduate degree programme.

TOEIC PREPARATION

The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) provides a profile of a student’s ability to use English in the workplace. It is used by corporations, educational institutions and governments throughout the world for recruitment, hiring and promotion purposes.

TOEIC does not have a pass/ fail mark. A student receives a score out of 990 which indicates her level of English proficiency.

The TOEIC preparation programme has been thoroughly designed to prepare students to sit the TOEIC exam and help them perform to the very best of their abilities. The courses focus on exam techniques and practice as well as improving business English skills. On this programme students:
- develop the complete range of skills required to complete the TOEIC exam
- receive expert guidance and training in essential examination strategies and techniques
- put their knowledge and skills into practice and gain valuable examination experience with practice tests and a “mock examination”.

TKT PREPARATION PROGRAMME

adult_TKTWhat is TKT?
The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is a test from Cambridge ESOL about teaching English to speakers of other languages. It aims to increase teachers’ confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world.

You cannot fail the TKT. Your scores in each skill area are averaged to provide you with an Overall Band Score. Your performance is rated for each Module on a scale of 1 to 4. An overall band score of 4 demonstrates an extensive knowledge of TKT content areas. Each module is free standing and candidates will receive a University of Cambridge ESOL certificate for each module.

ILA’s TKT Preparation Programme
The TKT preparation programme has been designed to thoroughly develop the core knowledge needed by English teachers of primary, secondary, and adult learners so that they will be successful on the exam. On this course you will:
- Fully develop the range of skills required to complete each of the TKT modules
- Benefit from having University of Cambridge ESOL CELTA trainers as your teachers
- Have full access to the modern and well resourced teacher training support centre
- Put your knowledge and skills into practice and gain valuable experience with practice tests and a ‘mock exam’

The course is 60 hours in duration and is offered on a full-time and part-time basis.

Candidates must have an Intermediate level of English.
